Back in 1953 a small group of artists living in the area decided bring Via Margutta back to life by displaying their art work in the street. These were the years soon after the war and Rome, like the rest of Europe, was recovering from the ‘wounds’ of the war.
Such impromptu exhibitions took place every year until 1969, when, for no particular reason, nothing was organised. The following year, however, the initiative resumed and an association was born and formalised to organise things properly – the Associazione Cento Pittori via Margutta.
Today the exhibition is a well established event and an opportunity for local artists to showcase their work. The association counts about 140 who share costs and help make it all happen. The local authorities support their efforts and cultural and political ‘heavy weights’ make themselves seen.
We recommend 100 Painters of Via Margutta because of its history (it’s not a brain child of some PR or marketing professional) and the opportunity to see and buy good quality art.
