Once populated by the poor, a substantial area of Monti was demolished during the Fascist period to make way for the via dei Fori Imperiali, which together with Via Nazionale and Via Cavour define its borders.
Monti is in many ways similar to Trastevere. It’s centrally located but just outside the heart of the city, features narrow, cobbled streets and has retained its ancient charm. However, Monti is less famous and therefore you are less likely to bump into hordes of tourists.
It’s position is particularly good. The Colosseum, Roman Forum and Piazza Venezia are a few minutes walk away. Baths of Trajan is just there. Termini train station isn’t far either.
