Before Piazza Navona became, well, a piazza it was an area where Romans competed in various games. Historians also believe that it used to be flooded for water games involving boats and other devices.
Today it’s one of the most popular spots in Rome. A must see, of course. Not so much for the crowd and the ‘artists’ selling the usual 15 minute portraits but for it’s fountains. Unless you like fighting your way through the crowds you should try and visit the piazza during the day.
Once you have seen the fountains and other monuments, slip away into one of the side streets and wonder around the narrow cobbled roads. The more you get lost the more chances you have to find something truly unique.
