Trastevere owes its existence to Aurelian (270–275) who decided to include it within the perimiter of the city walls, the ‘Mure Aureliane’.
Throughout the centuries Trastevere was home to the lower classes, including migrants from the east. In contrast to the wide streets and larger palaces of the wealthier Romans, Trastevere developed into a series of narrow and winding roads built with no particular planning in mind. Wealth has crept in now, of course, and the cobbled streets of Trastevere are considered charming and representative of old Roman traditions.
Trastevere today is a busy place. Both locals and tourists flock there every evening for a pizza and a stroll.
