Vatican

The Vatican City and the area around it. A special part of Rome for Roman Catholics and people interested in history and culture of one of the most extraordinary organizations on the world.

Here are some interesting facts about the Vatican City:

  • It’s 0.44 square kilometers (less than 1 square mile) – the world’s smallest state
  • Includes the largest Christian church in the world St. Peter’s Basilica.
  • It’s very green: about half of the total area makes up the Vatican Gardens
  • About 900 people live in the Vatican City (including 58 cardinals)
  • The Vatican City came into existence in 1929 (thanks to the Lateran Treaty)

The Vatican City borders with The Borgo, the river Tiber, Prati and the Aurelio ‘quartiere’ (neighborhood). In this site (and many others, as it goes) “Vatican” describes the areas adjacent to the Vatican City in the neighborhoods mentioned above.

The main focus remains the Vatican City but there are plenty of other things to see and do. Some will prefer to stay away from the heart of Rome, which is just across the river. Trastevere is not far away either.
