The Capitoline Hill is the ancient centre of Rome and because of that the most logical place to begin a trip around the city.
Romolus, the city’s founder, built his fortress here in 753 B.C. The main square you see today was laid out in 1538 by Michelagelo, where the bronze statue of the emperor Marcus Aurelius stands. Since its restoration , the real statue has been situated inside Palazzo dei Conservatori in a purpose-built, glass-walled room. The palace’s Roman sculpures actually form the oldest public art collection in the world. The museum contains numerous masterpieces and are an excellent introduction to Classical sculpture.
